“Everlusting Tales: The Sultry Snow White” by Djohan Hanapi × Mighty Jaxx!

Many famous fairy tales, whether we like to admit it or not, always contained at least a veiled reference to sexuality. And, of course, there have been many artists over the years that have made those alluded to elements more prominent, such as the work of Djohan Hanapi. Collectively referring to his work as “Everlusting Tales”, Djohan’s illustrations are reminiscent of the Disney-fied renditions of these female characters while still remaining wholly different, and I don’t just mean the fact that they rarely have clothes on. Or are found in various sexually awakened and aware ‘positions’. The very style of the linework is completely his own. And while he’s been creating these for years, it seems like the time is finally here for him to get a sculptural rendition of one of his designs…

Based on his “The Sultry Snow White” character, Mighty Jaxx have revealed the above as “a quick look at what to expect for the upcoming release”, implying that this illustration will be the basis for a designer toy rendition. And while her nudity is apparent, those looking closely might notice that the infamous poisoned apple from the story is in the picture, though being consumed in a way that I’m fairly certain the Brother Grimm wouldn’t have written.

Ashley Wood’s “DR3AD REFLEX” Begins with the “BRNZ MSTR TK” from ThreeA!

Ever since the “DR3AD REFLEX” event was announced, we’ve been yearning for more information on this narrative that promises to create a “conjoined pocket realm” wherein the various “worlds” within Ashley Wood‘s F3ACTORY division of threeA “will collide”. And now we’re being teased with the “next exciting chapter” in Woods’s worlds with the announcement of “BRNZ MSTR TK”, who is simply given the description: “They brought me back to hunt on a new world!” We’re told this will be a roughly 12-inch tall, 1/6th scale figure and that it is the figure that was revealed during the USVENTURE event (pictured below), but we may have to wait until August 31st, 2017 — when its released on BambalandStore.com — to find out for sure…

The Voltron Tribute Show “Wootron” Coming to the Woot Bear Gallery!

While most Americans might not recognize the TV show title Beast King GoLion, children of the ’80s will probably recall the heavily edited and re-assembled version of this Japanese animation, known here in the States as… Voltron! Featuring lion-shaped fighting robot starships that could merge into a giant Super Robot named Voltron, which the upcoming Wootron exhibition at San Francisco’s Woot Bear Gallery (1512 Haight Street) pays tribute to. With nine talented artists having been gathered from “various corners of the universe” to present their spin on this iconic series, pictured below are contributions by (clockwise): Jerome Lu, Zeb, HEALEYMADE, Scott Wilkowski, and Big C. Opening on Saturday, August 26th, 2017 from 6-9pm, those able to attend should go because, as Juelz Santana pointed out, “together we stand, divided we fall, united we form Voltron, and take on all”.

Blingaling’s Hand-Painted “Flamin’ Hott Ghouls” Edition!

A stylized and stunning rendition Max Schreck’s vampiric Count Orlok character from the cinema classic Nosferatu, “The Ghoul” may just be one of my top vinyl designs from this year. Designed by Craig Gleason, produced by Justin Ishmael, and actually pulled in Japanese vinyl by Luke “Grody Shogun” Rook, this 5-inch tall beauty has quite the pedigree. No wonder Robert “Blingaling” Evans acquired several of them to hand-paint, granting some nice fades to their forms and highlighting the texture of their exposed ‘skin’ areas. With three remade as “Flamin’ Hott Ghouls” and a singular “Disco Beetle Ghoul” rendition, these will be available on Thursday, August 24th, 2017 at 11am Pacific time in Blingaling’s new online shop for only $55 apiece.

Javier Jimenez’s “Watari Kappa” Design Debuts!

A kappa is a creature from Japanese folklore, a type of river imp with the beak of a bird and the shell of a turtle, usually with either yellowish-green or -blue reptilian ‘skin’. So when Javier Jimenez revealed his new figure design, the pictured “Watari Kappa”, or ‘wandering kappa’, I thought he made this creature both adorable and accurate looking! There’s even an element in the stories about how a kappa must always keep the top of their head wet, thus the lilypad like element Jimenez places there makes perfect sense. Created and designed by Jiménez, the “Watari Kappa” was sculpted by Victor Marin and produced by Andy Kuok. Limited to only 150 pieces, these will be making their debut at Jimenez’s solo Ghetto Hyakkiyagyo exhibition at Playtoys in Taipei. We understand they will be $30 apiece and copies will be made available to those unable to attend the event.

Watari Kappa is a young kappa girl who lived in a small pond. Life at the pond was so boring for her. She really wanted to see the world, but her friends and family said she should stay at the pond, as the world was a full of dangers.
One day, a mysterious traveler stopped by the pond and told her stories about all the beautiful places he had seen…and this gave her the courage to leave the pond and start her own trip! Now she’s traveling all around the world, discovering many wonderful places and of course, facing danger and adventure!!

Emilio Subirá shares with us today his latest resin art multiple… the next edition of his “I’m gonna burst” creation, the “YELLOW BASTARD” colorway!!! “This cute little sweet nihilistic ballon is worried about how long he will endure through his most recent party! Behind its cute appearance hides the pain of a nonconformist who is sick of it all who feels like he is invited to an absurd party that he can’t stand any more. That’s why he seems quite sad…” The “I’m gonna burst” sits 4.3″ tall, is made of resin, and will be limited to just 6 pieces… and each comes signed and numbered with a COA. PHOTO RECAP: Clutter’s They Came from Planet Rainbow Sparkles!

The Clutter Magazine Gallery gave a thematic twist to their annual cute and colorful group show, this time giving colors to the artist to use prominently in their works. And the result is a rainbow-like array displayed across the gallery’s wall space! With some truly impressive, breath-taking contributions included, I was lucky enough to attend the opening night and write a full recap for the CoART Magazine site, which can be read HERE.
